The main character, Mathew Sobel (computer systems genius and founder of Cyberstorm Entertainment) is dead before the book begins! in fact, Sobel uses his own death to trigger an unstoppable computer virus in the form of a daemon - a computer program that runs in the background and executes tasks at an appointed time, or in response to a certain specific event (think "mailer daemon").

Whether you are a computer geek, a cybergamer, or a complete technophobe, you'll be entertained and enlightened by this sinister, propulsive story.

I read this book because Barbara Kingsolver implored me (see front cover of book in red).

It was not a happy read, nor uplifting, nor even all that hopeful - but it was necessary. Remember Cher and Nicholas Cage in "Moonstruck"? This book is a "SNAP OUT OF IT!" slap for all of us. And by us, I mean we who knew global warming was occurring back when it was called the greenhouse effect, as well as those who think it is still just a plausible "theory."

Bill McKibben forces us beyond any lingering unsurity. We can stop talking, debating, questioning, even lamenting - and we can start understanding and adapting to this new planet Eaarth that we have made.
